SECOND GRADE
The Second Grade program is designed to give your child a strong academic foundation and set the ground work for life longing learning. We recognize that not all children learn the same way, or at the same rate. Many different techniques and experiences are used to enhance all student learning, challenging them to do their best and continue to grow and learn.
The classroom serves as a learning community which supports the growth of the whole child-spiritually, academically, socially and physically. Lessons are centered around the child in a developmentally appropriate approach.
Second Grade is a very special year. During this year children prepare to receive two sacraments, First Reconciliation and First Communion. Children learn about the ten commandments, forgiveness, and penance, as well as the Mass and their own growing role in the church. Our Language Arts program teaches reading, writing, spelling, listening and speaking skills holistically. Students read and write daily. Phonics, decoding, letter-sound knowledge, vocabulary, and writing skills are taught throughout the day. In Math, the children study the principles of addition and subtraction.

Students learn to add two and three digit numbers with and without regrouping. Other topics include time, money, graphing, number sense, measurement, problem-solving, geometry, statistics and probability. In Science, children learn about plants and animals, health and nutrition, and matter. Children will compare living and non living things, study life cycles and development of various animals, as well as learning to identify the parts of the plant and how they grow. They learn about what it means to be healthy, physically, mentally and socially. Nutrition, dental care and hygiene are taught. They also will learn about the earth, rocks, soil, solids, liquids and gasses. In Social Studies, children learn about neighborhoods and communities and their roles within them. Rural, suburban and urban communities are studied. They learn about laws and the function of government. Students also learn about landmarks, features of the earth and bodies of water. Students work hands-on with globes, maps, and charts to enrich learning.
In the Second Grade every child is seen as a child of God, each with their own unique talents, interests and strengths. Each child is challenged to reach their full academic potential through a variety of learning approaches throughout the school day. They are also challenged spiritually to grow in their knowledge of the church and all its’ teachings so that they may reach out to others and give of themselves to their community, as well as to deepen their personal relationship with God.
